sustainability.
The fashion industry is a major contributor to pollution, with 85% of textiles ending up in landfills each year, totaling 92 million tonnes globally. This number is projected to increase even more, to 134 million tonnes by 2030. Fast fashion in particular is harmful to both the environment and workers.
Choosing to wear Vintage and upcycled clothing helps reduce waste and pollution, as most Vintage items were made with high-quality construction and were designed to last. By reusing them we can decrease the need for new production and materials while adding new vibes to your long lasting wardrobe.
For our non-vintage pieces we use ethically made, eco-friendly garments crafted from locally grown fibers in renewable energy-powered facilities. At SUMAVI, we prioritize sustainability in all aspects of the business, including our packaging. We keep it minimal and eco-friendly, using compostable or recyclable mailers made from recycled materials and labels made from 100% recycled yarns OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified. All orders within Switzerland are shipped climate-neutrally.
Let's stand against fast fashion!
colorants.
The use of traditional textile dyes and chemicals in clothing manufacturing has significant negative consequences for workers and our planet, particularly in countries with high clothing production. Improper disposal of chemical water waste contributes to widespread pollution, as evidenced by the black rivers in countries like India and Bangladesh.
Although natural dyes are often considered a solution to the environmental issues caused by synthetic dyes, they have limitations. Natural dyes are only effective on specific natural materials and tend to fade with sunlight and washing. They also lack the vibrancy and durability of synthetic dyes, requiring much larger quantities, even kilograms to achieve the same color intensity. Lighter colors often require non-eco-friendly heavy metal fixers or even dry cleaning.
The complete elimination of chemicals in the textile dying process, also in ours, unfortunately is simply not possible. However, we are committed to minimize our chemical usage and environmental impact in our small production by using non-toxic paints and low-impact dyes which don’t contain heavy metals or toxic substances and don't require toxic additives or fixatives. If necessary we use neutralisation and responsible disposal methods. We reuse vats multiple times, keep the water consumption to a minimum and use eco-friendly detergents. SUMAVI aims to create textile art that combines creativity with environmental responsibility!
one PURCHASE. one TREE. one PLANET.
To make a positive impact with every purchase, SUMAVI plants a tree through our partnership with Onetreeplanted.org. Trees provide crucial ecosystem services such as restoring ecosystems, filtering air pollutants, sequestering carbon, providing habitat for wildlife, release oxygen for us to breathe, hold the soil together or protecting us from UV rays. Your tree will be planted where it is needed the most, contributing to a healthier planet for all.
Let's grow a forest together!
